Pranayama

Just keep breathing 💜 The word pranayama (meaning yogic breathing practices) is often translated as to control the breath. My teacher would say linguistically this is incorrect - that it means to expand the vital energy of breathing. This week I’ve been working on a little project with a student from #edinburghuniversity who approached me @tribeyoga to do traditional pranayama practices while connected to a sensor! The data is collected & graphed on an app before my eyes. Very cool to explore the potential of yogic technologies with modern scientific tools. My connection to yoga was formed by my breath. (Or lack-thereof). I’ve always been asthmatic & grew up experiencing frequent attacks. Yoga felt safe. Moving with my breath I felt calm & connected. I began to work with my breath as a barometer to understand my thoughts & feelings and the way they effect my body & state of being. Sometimes just a single deep breath is enough to bring us back to ourselves. ✨ artwork by moi Namaste 🙏 📷 @yogawithpiper
